SELF-CONFIDENCE: A MEDICINE FOR GROWTH

By: Gloria Mensah

There are times I keep wondering how individuals can build their self-confidence.

What is Self-confidence?

Self-confidence is the ability to have trust, faith in, and control of a person's capabilities, worth and skills.

It is the act of individuals believing and feeling secured in their decisions, judgements among others made.

What are some of the benefits of Self-confidence?

It plays a crucial role in various aspects of life, which includes professional relationships, personal relationships and an individual's overall well-being.

Self-confidece helps a person to face challenges, take risks and handle issues with resilience.

Also, it enable people to have a positive perception of themselves, express their opinions and thoughts on issues openly and enhances the motivation in pursuing their goals.

Are there challenges in building Self-confidence

Yes, building self-confidence is not an easy task, which some of the issues surrounding it may be:

Many people do not believe in themselves, and doubt their own abilities and knowledge on things they can do.

Sometimes people allow their past experiences and mistakes to influence their judgement in a manner, that may affect  their current dealings or affairs.

Some people like to compare themselves to others, which is a major factor in crushing one's self-confidence.

Moreover, lacking skills and ideas about new activities one may want to engage in can also decrease the confidence of an individual.

How to build Self-confidence?

Self-confidence is a long-term journey, which needs to be nurtured through personal experiences, challenging oneself, seeking support and embracing positivity in life.

A person must learn to have a positive self-image, thus believing in oneself, knowing their strengths and weaknesses and also acknowledging areas they lack ideas for improvement.

Another way by learning new skills, in which a person has to be determined in order to achieve the goal as one may encounter obstacles in their life.

Self-confidence can be achieved through learning to practice self-care, by prioritising physical, mental and emotional health among others.

Also, individuals must learn to appreciate and celebrate their little achievements in life being personal or professional.

Learning to face fears with courage, by partaking in activities one is scared of engaging in, is a way of boosting self-confidence.

In addition, when it gets to a point where gaining self-confidence seems to be impossible, watching motivational videos online and consulting therapists or life coaches can be a solution.

Self-confidence is a beneficial way of improving a person’s life, thus taking note of all the benefits and putting in effort to achieve it, will result in positive outcomes.
